We are delighted that we can finally start to plan a return to Fit4Life on the 10th May.  Meeting point will be in the Westside.

In the meantime, we would appreciate if anyone who hasn’t already registered with the Club for 2021 would do so before Friday 7th May.

This will help us with planning numbers and making sure that we have enough leaders available for each group.

Runners who have not been with the Club before are welcome to join, check out the different paced groups on the Fit4Life Training page for more information or contact gchfit4life@gmail.com

Hope everyone has been keeping well and are looking forward to getting back training together again!

Covid-19 Update 12th March

Message from Hamish Adams, CEO Athletics Ireland.

We are very conscious that our membership is anxious to return to training and competition when the Government allows us to exit the current Level 5 lockdown. We continue to discuss and lobby for a return for athletics on a weekly basis with representatives of the Sport Ireland Expert Group and other key decision makers. We do note that in the recently released Resilience and Recovery Covid19 document that there is provision for a return to activity for outdoor, non-contact training in pods of 15 at Level 4. We see this as a very positive development for our sport.

We greatly appreciate the patience you have all shown during these pandemic times and we commit to regular, transparent communication with our stakeholders. We will share any developments on the re-opening of sport from the Sport Ireland Expert Group as we receive them.

The country remains at level 5 until April 5th and all sporting activity is on hold awaiting further guidance from Government. Full details of level 5 restrictions can be found HERE.

Lockdown Warmup #1

Regular warm-ups can be done very simply at home as demonstrated here in this video kindly shared by Athletics Ireland & Killarney Valley AC / Killarney Valley AC Arena.

Fingers crossed our members will have warm-ups in Dangan with friends in the near future…

For now, we have our 1 Mile Challenge with Ennis Track , our club’s ongoing Virtual Challenge and our Online Zoom classes on Fridays with coach/Physio Ruth Molloy which started so successfully last Friday; thanks Ruth! Finally, we also have our in-club mini-competition to motivate our members on their return.

International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day and as an Athletics club it’s a timely opportunity to honour our international stars of the past of 4 days – and to also celebrate the many women who make GCH – the largest club in the country in terms of members – operate so smoothly…from our tireless committee officers & coaches (both Senior & Juvenile) past & present, our Fit4Life leaders, Streets of Galway helpers and hundreds of athletes!

All of the above will typically put in hundreds if not thousands of voluntary hours in a year in their positions. The beneficiaries are all of us.

Thanks to each & every one of them on International Women’s Day.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

European Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland

Congrats on flying the Irish flag so well this evening.

  • Phil Healy (4th in 400m Final with PB)
  • Cian McPhillips (4th in 800m Semi with a superb European under 20 Record of 1:48.06)
  • Mark English (4th in 800m Semi)
  • Nadia Power (4th in 800m Semi)

.

Despite the four 4th places, the only negative is that there won’t be a big crowd to welcome them and the squad back home for the applause they deserve. With a day to go, Ireland’s European Indoors has already been hugely uplifting & encouraging in terms of the future.

The Irish in action on Sunday (Irish times) are:

  • 9.18am Ciara Neville Emerald AC 60m Heat 1 4th in Heat, QUALIFIED FOR SEMI
  • 9.34am Molly Scott St Laurence O’Toole AC 60m Heat 3, 7TH IN HEAT
  • 9.42am Joan Healy Leevale Athletic Club 60m Heat 4. 8TH IN HEAT
  • 12.46pm Sarah Lavin Emerald AC 60mH Semi Final 7TH IN SEMI
  • 4.52 pm Sean Tobin Clonmel AC 3000m Final

Morning/afternoon sessions live on the RTE player and BBC.

Some great exposure for the club on Galway Bay FM featuring under 19 athlete Robert McDonnell, Senior star, Sarah Quinn and club stalwarts Brian Bruton & David Glynn. Also included is Connacht & Tuam P.R.O. Pierce O’Callaghan…all 5 have significantly raised the profile of athletics in Galway over the years, so brilliant to see them featured at such length in this interview.

Wishing Niamh all the very best!

We would like to publicly thank our outgoing GCH Secretary for her enormous contribution to the Club over the past number of years on behalf of all the Members. Niamh has also served as Club Chairperson and Race Director for the GCH leg of the 5K Series. Her sense of humour and calmness will be missed at our Committee meetings. Niamh also managed to complete her PhD while in office, so no there’s excuses for anyone wanting to get involved with the Club. Wishing Niamh all the very best.
