Farewell Brendan!

Message from Brendan Staunton as he leaves GCH.

We wish Brendan and his family every good wish as he returns to Mayo. Thank you Brendan for all you have contributed to the GCH over the years. It’s been an honour!

Message to club and its members.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this and let everyone know that I am moving to another club. I recently moved home to Co Mayo with my family and have decided to join a club closer to home. I hope to develop the throwing scene here and build a throwing community.

Galway City Harriers have been an amazing club to be part of and I can’t thank you enough for everything. I put my blood, sweat and tears into the GCH colours and everytime I stepped into the circle to represent the club was my absolute honour.

To my teammates on the league team it was great to make history with you on more than one occasion and I know you will continue to be amazing.

Thank you to all the coaching staff and the board for everything over the years, and a big thank you to Sean Breathnach for helping me develop into the athlete I am today.

Big thanks to Brendan Glynn also for the tons of encouragement and support since day one.

See you on the battlefield friends,

Brendan Staunton.

Happy Christmas from all in GCH

Fit4Life Christmas 2019

Wishing all our members, coaches, leaders, parents, committee members, families, friends, followers, fellow athletes and rivals a very Happy Christmas from all at Galway City Harriers. Enjoy the festivities!

Resolution Run 1st January 2021

Galway Athletics and GCH are launching the Resolution Run as a virtual event for New Year 2021, as due to restrictions the event cannot go ahead as a road race. This event has been a fundraiser for athletics and other sports in the county via a major volunteer effort ( Monivea RFC have been a major helper and beneficiary ) and this years proceeds will once again go towards funding athletics at juvenile and senior level in the county . You can sign up here and a tee shirt or long sleeve can be added to your order also. We ask you to complete a 5k on a course of your choice – of which there are many well known ones!- over the period from New Years Eve to 6th Jan and record your time. Best wishes and many thanks from all at Galway Athletics and GCH !

Virtual Cross Country Challenge Results

The final results* of the nationwide Virtual Cross Country Challenge (which was as close to an All Irelands as we got in 2020) have just been released by Athletics Ireland and the Regional Development Officers who drove this great idea. A massive 4600 juveniles took part and -as per normal years – to finish in the top 100 in any category represents a superb performance as there literally hundreds in most races, closer to a thousand in some.

Galway City Harriers had a wonderful participation rate and we congratulate all who took part and all who made the 100* listed (below) in their categories today…William McDonnell was highest placed of our athletes, finishing in 18th place of 138 u17 boys, while Seamus Hayes was a brilliant 27th of the u11s. Further details of final national placings* are listed below and in the attached link.

*It must be noted that all these results need to be taken as a guide or benchmark as courses and conditions varied across the events held by individual clubs.
