Galway City Harriers welcomes new volunteers every year; across all areas including coaches, officials and general helpers. Galway City Harriers appreciates all those that give up their time, effort and other skills to assist the club to function effectively and successfully. If you have a few hours to spare please get in touch. Being part of the club as a volunteer is very rewarding and you can do as much or little as you wish.
Volunteers
Rewarding involvement with your local athletics club
Coaching
All our coaches are volunteers and come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are ex-athletes, some are parents and others are those who have an interest in the sport. Whoever you are Galway City Harriers will welcome you to their coaching team.
Our Coaches have all completed various levels of the Athletic Ireland Coaching Programme. Our coaches are all volunteers and give up their time freely to assist athletes in the Club. We are always under pressure for coaches/supervision at training sessions, so please speak to one of the coaches at training if you would be interested in helping out at any session. Expert knowledge is not required to assist – as this knowledge can be built up over time and the Club funds all Athletic Ireland training courses for interested parties.
Volunteering at Events
Throughout the year Club Members are called upon to help out with Athletics Ireland events.
Duties include marshalling and course set-up.
For AAI Competitions the Club has to provide volunteer assistance in line with the number of GCH members competing in an event.
Other events that members help out with are:
- 5K Series – GCH Race – May/June
- Resolution Run – January 1st
- Galway Primary Schools Cross Country events
Helping with Administration
As one of the largest Athletics Clubs in the country there is quite a bit of administration work that goes on behind the scenes.
We are regularly looking for assistance in the admin side of things, setting up and maintaining our backoffice systems.
- Registration of Club Members
- Website updates
- Club Communication
- Race Reports
- Competition Entries
- Online Booking Systems
How can I help?
All of our Coaches, Committees and Fit4Life Leaders are offering their services on a voluntary basis to the benefit of Galway City Harrier Senior and Juvenile members. We would ask that Members support them in turn by helping out when and where they can.
If you can use your skills to support and develop the Club, you will find that your contribution is much appreciated. We do not ask you to commit to a set number of hours and many of the roles are on an ad hoc basis.

Streets of Galway Volunteer
The main fundraiser for the Club each year is the Galway Clinic Streets of Galway 8K which is held in August on the Saturday after the Bank Holiday at 7pm.
This is when the Club Members really come together as a Community and everyone is involved in helping out. Some members are involved for for months in advance as part of our very dedicated organising Committee.
Others are involved in the run up to the event helping with logistics, course set up and race number collection. Everyone who is available on Race Day lends a hand to ensure that Galway City Harriers continue to host one the best AAI Road Races on the racing calendar.
There are a variety of roles that we need to fill on the day, marshalls (lots of them), catering, moving things, pacing, transport, marshalls (even more), medical assistance and clean up. It really is “all hands on deck”! The buzz on Race Day is just electric! If you would like to volunteer or assist in race marshalling or anything else please check out the Race Day Volunteers page. All help is very much appreciated! If you have any further queries in the meantime, please contact us at 089 4919167 or streetsofgalway@gmail.com.
